Harlech Castle

The nations unofficial anthem, loved by rugby fans and regimental bands alike, is said to describe the longest siege in British history (1461-1468) which took place here during the War of the Roses. Seven years! It only took that long to build the castle, between 1283 and 1290 to be exact. Edwards tried and tested walls within walls model was put together in super-fast time by an army of nearly a thousand skilled craftsmen and labourers.

Beaumaris Gaol in Steeple Lane was built in 1829 by Joseph Hansom, the man who also designed the Hansom Cab. It is famous for its brutal punishment methods and a number of hangings took place there. It is now a museum with exhibits, some rather gruesome, revealing what it must have been like for prisoners then.
Rhuddlan Castle
Rhuddlan. Whats in a name? Rhudd is the old Welsh word for red and glan means bank. The Normans left us with roe, a word derived from the French le rous, meaning redhead. Roeland is first mentioned in 1086 but by 1277 it was known as Rhuddlan and Edward Is chosen location for a mighty scary castle. The castle is rather appropriately built of red stone.
